I agree with Piper (and Grudem) on these points. Does anyone know how the gift of prophecy operates in the church Piper pastors?

I think Protestants need to revive the office of "Doctor of the Church" for theologians who serve the church in an official capacity. Not sure if that addresses what you said.

the state isn't telling the church what to do.... its simply saying that a pastor cannot get in the pulpit and say "vote/don't vote" for so and so......

that's it.... that's the entire debate. and if a pastor MUST say those words.... he can. he just can't be tax-exempt and do it.

In Virginia there are UM churches everywhere and they rival the old Episcopal churches for having the most gorgeous old buildings. They are also amongst the most liberal, women-ordaining, Scripture denying folks out there. I wish I could attend one, but there is no way I could. Another denomination where black is white and up is down.

Mimi,

What did Rick say? Did he let you "Amen"? :)

I like the involvement that you see in the black tradition too. Like anything in the Christian life, I think that it can become ritualized as opposed to heartfelt or about the glory of God, and I thought that Thabiti Anyabwile had some good observations on this: http://endued.wordpress.com/2009/11/03/expositional-preaching-crosses-cultural-boundaries/. When it reflects a genuine understanding brought to the heart and mind, I'm all for it.

I too like the involvement and verbal 'encouragement' from the congregation, which is seen (and heard) more so in black churches. It's hard not to think that others are not 'into it' if they are not apparently engaged. We must guard from that. Yes, I know. One doesn't have to be jumping and shouting to be sincere in worship. I don't know, I'm no preacher but I must say there's got to be a definite sense of joy and motivation in a preacher's heart when a his sermon is so bold and truthful that it inspires his sheep to proclaim a 'hallelujah' or 'amen' more than once in a while. I've actually asked Rick if it was okay for me to yell out 'amen' during church.

Maybe there is an upside to this: the guest may end up asking God to guide him to a church that preaches the Word instead of relying on gimmicks. Sometimes we learn from our mistakes -- in this case the shallowness of grasping for a Starbucks card in a church context.
