Psa 8:1-9

(1)  To the choirmaster: according to The Gittith. A Psalm of David. O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens.

(2)  Out of the mouth of babies and infants, you have established strength because of your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger.

(3)  When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,

(4)  what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?

(5)  Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor.

(6)  You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet,

(7)  all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field,

(8)  the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas.

(9)  O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

This psalm is quoted in the New Testament, referring to Jesus. It starts with praise and ends with praise, declaring “How majestic is your name in all the earth”. The Hebrew word translated as “majestic” means “large, wide, or powerful”. God’s name is large, wide, and powerful. God is so big and powerful that He can’t be contained. Throughout the Bible, God makes Himself known through different names, which all point to different characteristics about Himself. It seems like it is never-ending how big and awesome God is.

Notice God’s strategy to defeat the enemy and avenger. He uses the mouth of babies. There is some debate whether this is to be understood as literal (for real) or figurative (metaphor). I think it is both. God uses the simple things of this world to surprise and shock the powerful and wise. God likes it this way to sort of rub it in the face of His enemies. God’s name will be glorified and God will use a stuttering coward like Moses to deliver His people out of Egypt. God uses a little shepherd boy David to kill Goliath. God doesn’t want anyone thinking that it was strength and power that gets the victory so he uses “babies”.

David then goes on to discuss the “son of man”, whom the New Testament views as being Jesus. He has been sent as one a little lower than angelic beings in that Jesus took on the limitations of humanity. He is powerful nonetheless. Jesus has been given rule over all creation. All things have been placed under His feet. We now live in a time where Jesus sits on the throne and is at work bringing all things under His authority.  One day, ALL people will bow before Him, confessing His lordship.

Have you bowed before Jesus and acknowledged His rule and reign in your own life? Do so now. You might feel weak and insignificant like a little baby, but God will accept yoru praise and use it in a powerful way for His glory.
