A lot of people will notice that the calendar notes that today is both Maundy Thursday and the first day of Spring. First of all, some of you may be wondering what “Maundy” means and think it insignifiant since everyone is working, the kids are in school, and the mailman will pay a visit. BUT, Maundy Thursday is indeed important, because it is supposed to remind us of the Lord’s words to love one another. John Piper posted the following regarding today (http://www.desiringgod.org/Blog/1136_thursday_of_the_commandment),

Today is Maundy Thursday. The name comes from the Latin mandatum, the first word in the Latin rendering of John 13:34, “A new commandment (Mandatum novum) I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” This commandment was given by the Lord on the Thursday before his crucifixion. So Maundy Thursday is the “Thursday of the Commandment.”

So, make it a point to meditate upon our Lord’s words to love one another today.  Maundy Thursday also reminds of some other important events:

Jesus washed His disciples feet

Jesus broke bread and pointed to the New Covenant that was being established through His body and blood

Jesus sweat blood while praying at Gethsemane

Jesus was betrayed by Judas Iscariot

By the way, it is the first day of Spring, and here in upstate New York snowflakes are falling. It falls, only to dissipate at the slightly warmer ground, as if to acknowledge that Spring is here and it is no longer welcome. We are fasting today as a church and will gather tonight for a soup and bread fellowship meal…to be followed by worship and the Lord’s Supper. I hunger now for Christ’s body and blood to fill me, forever grateful for the New Covenant that washed away all my sin. Let us turn to our Lord in renewed adoration and towards one another in zealous love on this day!!!
